National and international standardization bodies: National and international standardization bodies are appointed by governments to develop, maintain, and publish standards. The purpose of standards is to ensure that the quality, safety, and compatibility of products, services, and processes are suitable for use by consumers so that they are protected from harm due to product and service defects. The implementation of standards is mandatory in the countries where they are in force, which is different from guidelines, which are only recommendations to people who are free to implement them or not and are issued by individuals or professional organizations. Note that, as mentioned in the introduction of this discussion, many standardization bodies do not publish the scientific and technical sources for their standards.
